Podcast Episode 15: Haute Girl Summer NYFW

On this episode of the Fashion League podcast, my friend Alan Diamond, who is a Senior Account Director at fashion public relations agency The Bromley Group, puts me in the hot seat as we recap New York Fashion Week.

This was designer Tom Ford’s first season as the Chairman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Some of the changes under Tom Ford include shortening the official schedule to a more manageable 5 days, where prior seasons were more like 10 days.

Also under Tom Ford, the CFDA appointed new board members, answering the call for more diversity in the CFDA. Virgil Abloh, Maria Cornejo, Carly Cushnie, and Kerby Jean-Raymond (Pyer Moss) will assume the CFDA seats vacated by Kara Ross (who’s husband planned a Trump fundraiser in the Hamptons), Georgina Chapman (Marchesa designer and ex-wife of Harvey Weinstein), as well as the more anodyne vacated seats of Marcus Wainwright (rag & bone), and jewelry designer Mimi So.

Ann Wintour was inducted into Hot Girl Summer; she was pictured next to Meghan thee Stallion at the Coach runway show. With Meg posting an instagram image captioned “Hot Girl Anna”.

Megan Thee Stallion also attended Rihanna’s Diamond Ball charity gala, which was the day after her Savage Fenty show. Rihanna’s Savage Fenty collection was shown at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, and while no phones were allowed during the show, everyone will be able to stream the show on Amazon beginning September 20. The show included performances from DJ Khaled, Big Sean and Migos.

Marc Jacobs closed out New York Fashion Week with a show drawing inspiration from iconic women of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Specific references included Jane Fonda, Barbara Streisand, and Jackie Kennedy’s stylish sister - Lee Radziwill.

Notably, there were fewer influencers in attendance this season. There was a recent report stating that Instagram fraud can cost advertisers $1.3 billion in 2019, with the potential to reach up to $1.5 billion by 2020. As a result, more brands are allocating PR and advertising dollars elsewhere.

And I revealed to Alan that Nicky Hilton’s nickname is Nicky but... her name ain’t Nicole.
