Telfar Hints at First-Ever Store Opening During NYFW
Some point to supply chain disruption, others site Kanye (Ye) West’s unconventional design process. Whatever the case may be, we’ve only seen an oddly-shaped electric blue jacket from the YZY x GAP collaboration. Yet, since that fateful time that the heads over at the Gap decided not to move forward with the well-anticipated Telfar x GAP partnership and instead try their luck with YZY, the Telfar brand has only been on the up. Founded on a sense of community, and receiving increasing support from the fashion establishment, Telfar has experienced countless wins in recent memory — from their UGG collaboration, to having 1,000 units sold out on its e-commerce site in just 12 hours.
During this New York Fashion Week that just ended, which many netizens accused of being quiet, Telfar was able to generate some noise for itself. In a cerebral space traditionally occupied by Marc Jacobs, who had the closing show of NYFW for over ten years, this season, Telfar captivated the attention of the brand’s growing community as the city’s closer.
With a 90-minute event that featured Telfar TV and performances from artist Aya Brown, model Gitoo Cuchifrito and singer Ian Isiah, Telfar gave New York a glimpse of what’s to come. "These clothes need a physical space for you to experience them, find your size, I can't wait. The project is to bring the TV channel into the shopping space, like a big reality show," shared designer Telfar Clemens. During the event, attendees also witnessed a Wheel of Fortune-esque game — which is quite tongue-in-cheek considering how difficult it can be to get your hands on a Telfar handbag.
